\u201cThis morning, on the way to work, a guy pulled out from a side street in front of me\u201d, I told Dave, \u201cbut I was ready for him and I expected him to do exactly what he did, and I stopped the bike three metres away. Stupid blind bastard.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dave frowned, and pointed at the next table. There was a guy there with a white stick and sunglasses and a Labrador with a harness on it at his feet. A kid approached and went to pat the dog. \u201cHey, kid\u201d, I said. \u201cDon\u2019t pat the dog.\u201d<\/p>\n
She stopped and looked at me. \u201cWhy?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a working dog\u201d, I told her. \u201cIt\u2019s working. It\u2019s responsible for this guy\u2019s safety, and you shouldn\u2019t distract it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh. Okay,\u201d said the kid. \u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n
She left. \u201cThanks\u201d, said the blind guy. \u201cA lot of people don\u2019t understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re welcome\u201d, I said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a new dog\u201d, said the blind guy. \u201cHe\u2019s still learning.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cReally?\u201d I said. \u201cWhat happened to the old dog?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had a problematic relationship,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow can you have a problematic relationship with a Labrador?\u201d asked Dave.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe didn\u2019t see eye to eye,\u201d said the blind guy.<\/p>\n
We stared at him. He had a poker face.<\/p>\n
Challenge accepted, I thought. \u201cI know that can happen\u201d, I said. \u201cI dated a blind girl a while back.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cReally?\u201d said the blind guy.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes\u201d, I said. \u201cShe used to tell me all the time how well endowed I am, but I\u2019m pretty sure she was just pulling my leg.\u201d<\/p>\n
He still had a poker face.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember her,\u201d said Dave. \u201cIt took you ages to get her husband\u2019s voice right.\u201d<\/p>\n
Poker face.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s good,\u201d Dave murmured admiringly. Aloud, he said \u201cWe have to go. Nice talking to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dave stopped at the bar on the way out, and gave the barmaid twenty dollars. \u201cPlease don\u2019t let the guy with the dog pay for drinks until that runs out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He stopped briefly where my bike was parked, and shook my hand. \u201cLove your work, Al\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know,\u201d I said, \u201cI don\u2019t think he heard me say stupid blind bastard.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah\u201d, said Dave. \u201cSay what you will about deaf people…\u201d<\/p>\n
