It was winter. There were a few scooters in Tokyo. Hardly any proper motorcycles. A Harley bagger, a Triumph T\u2019bird twin, a Hayabusa. This in a city of twelve million. More scooters.<\/p>\n
The girl-child had studied the language for five years. The taxi driver couldn\u2019t speak English. Excellent, I thought. I have a translator. The driver looked like an erudite fellow, who would appreciate a robust discussion on controversial subjects. \u201cHow do you say\u201d I asked the girl-child, \u201c\u2019Katanas are crap swords?\u201d<\/p>\n
She was horrified. \u201cYou can\u2019t say that, Dad\u201d, she told me. \u201cIt\u2019s rude. They are very polite people.\u201d<\/p>\n
We went from Tokyo to Kyoto, by bus and train. It snowed a lot. The motorways were all great high speed sweepers, and all the roads I saw to the side looked to be fun on a motorcycle. I saw no motorcycles.<\/p>\n

We bussed on. There was more snow. We saw some hitman monkeys at the side of the road. We stopped in a parking lot in Kyoto. A whole bunch of what I thought were motorcycles pulled up nearby. I went over to check them out. They were GoldWing trikes, twenty or thirty of them, with LED lights that looked like neon, and their drivers wore Santa Claus suits.<\/p>\n

I shook my head sadly. A tanuki came out from under a shrub and ran across the parking lot.<\/p>\n
We went to a Shinto shrine the next day. There was a big car park with a souvenir shop. The girls went into the shop. I saw a motorcycle parked fifty metres away. The rider and his woman were nearby, doing up their jackets. I went to check it out.<\/p>\n
It was a Yamaha XJR400. We call naked in-line fours \u201cUJMs\u201d in Australia, for Universal Japanese Motorcycle. It was the only naked in-line four I\u2019d seen in the country. I decided it was a Unique Japanese Motorcycle.<\/p>\n
From what I could see, it was the same as the XJR1300 you can buy in Australia, but with a 400cc motor. The government makes it expensive and difficult to own a motorcycle over 400cc in Japan, for some reason. It had an aftermarket pipe, and a rusty drive chain.<\/p>\n
\u201cExcuse me\u201d, I said to the rider. \u201cDo you mind if I photograph your motorcycle?\u201d<\/p>\n
He smiled and shrugged and said something in Japanese. I decided he didn\u2019t understand English. I took my camera out, and pointed at it, and pointed at his motorcycle, and said \u201cKatanas are crap swords.\u201d<\/p>\n
He smiled and nodded, and pointed to his motorcycle, and got out of the way. I took some shots. Then I turned off my camera, and put it in my pocket, and said to him \u201cSumo wrestlers are fat and ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n
He smiled and bowed. His girlfriend smiled and bowed. So I smiled and bowed.<\/p>\n
He started his bike and mounted it. He could only just touch the ground with his toes. His girlfriend got on. He could still only just touch the ground. They rode off.<\/p>\n
The drive chain made a bad noise.<\/p>\n
The girl-child appeared at my elbow. \u201cWatcha doin\u2019, Dad?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve never seen one of those motorcycles\u201d, I said, \u201cso I asked the guy if I could photograph it, and he said yes.\u201d<\/p>\n
