I said it.<\/p>\n<p>You can either believe me, or you can go and ride one and then you can believe. I\u2019ve ridden customised monsters with 21-inch-over front-ends, and I\u2019ve ridden evil stroked Shovelheads with 24-inch apehangers on six-inch risers. I\u2019ve ridden VRODS, Super Glides, Ultra Glides, Electra Glides, CVOs, the Destroyer, and even a few of those hateful AMF-era nightmares. All the sunlight has been swallowed.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>I am an unapologetic fan of the marque. I have ridden more and varied Harley-Davidsons than most people, and I have never paid any attention to the largely inchoate reviews the motorcycle media offers up in its vain efforts to critique something beyond its limited ken.<\/p>\n<p>Expecting sportsbike riders or adventure riders or former racers to \u201cget\u201d Harleys is like asking me to get calculus. I don\u2019t, I won\u2019t, and there\u2019s not even any point in trying.<\/p>\n<p>You can look up the context-free specs of the FXDR for yourself. Just don&#8217;t forget to install a rear tailight and blinkers so the cops leave you alone.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Creatures like me, on the other hand\u2026well, we\u2019re more like Spaniards who understand and appreciate bullfighting while the rest of the world hates on us.<\/p>\n<p>But we don\u2019t care that the rest of the world doesn\u2019t get it. We get it. Because killing bulls, like riding Harleys, ain\u2019t for everyone \u2013 and that\u2019s just fine. You either get Harleys and love them, or you don\u2019t and think they\u2019re rubbish. And that\u2019s fine too. It\u2019s not compulsory to buy one, you know.<\/p>\n<p>But allow me to unpack some more of this bag.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1433948\" style=\"width: 544px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1433948\" class=\"wp-image-1433948 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/3-e1549524606699.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/3-e1549524606699.jpg 534w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/3-e1549524606699-258x300.jpg 258w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/3-e1549524606699-301x350.jpg 301w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1433948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>I did work hard at that final centimetre of chicken-strip. But a 240 tyre is what it is<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the last decade or so, Harley\u2019s previously unshakeable halo of insurmountable cool has slipped a little. It has gone from being seen as the iconic choice of the feral outlaw to something doddering old people tool about on while getting in the way of traffic.<\/p>\n<p>This is a problem for Harley-Davidson and its declining sales reflect this.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1433969\" style=\"width: 475px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1433969\" class=\"wp-image-1433969 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/15-e1549524750599.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/15-e1549524750599.jpg 465w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/15-e1549524750599-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/15-e1549524750599-263x350.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1433969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>I did not like these plastic additions in the pictures. They work quite well in actuality. And that air filter is a statement of pure glory.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>But Harley would not be Harley if it just surrendered to market forces and a changing perception of cool.<\/p>\n<p>And it hasn\u2019t and it won\u2019t. And the FXDR is but the first shot in what I trust will be a barrage.<\/p>\n<p>So why is it the best Harley ever built?<\/p>\n<p>Because it goes around corners. And it likes going around corners. And it feels good going around corners. And it honks coming out of those corners \u2013 160Nm at 3500rpm is gonna do what it\u2019s gonna do.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1433997\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1433997\" class=\"wp-image-1433997 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/18.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/18.jpg 620w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/18-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/18-467x350.jpg 467w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/18-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1433997\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Minimal but informative.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>I did one corner on the Putty Road that felt so good the bitumen almost tore off my leg and chucked it into one of those unforgiving sandstone walls. I limped for a week, and remain amazed to this day at just how hard the FXDR can corner. You will see lean angles on this that will juice your he-lemons.<\/p>\n<p>The leg-tearing-off thing was entirely my fault, of course. I\u2019d been pushing the FXDR harder and harder and faster and faster up the Putty and wondering just when I was going to hear that familiar and satisfying grinding noise that always tells you you\u2019ve reached PGC (Peak Ground Clearance). I was in the Zone, as it were. And because I was in the Zone, I failed to appreciate just how fast I was going around corners with my stupid feet facing forward.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1434007\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1434007\" class=\"wp-image-1434007 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4.jpg 620w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4-424x350.jpg 424w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4-600x495.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1434007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>I found an old settler cemetery up in the hills behind Lake St Clair&#8230;<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1434015\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1434015\" class=\"wp-image-1434015 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6.jpg 620w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6-518x350.jpg 518w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6-600x405.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1434015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Those at rest had a view in both directions for what it was worth.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>And then I did.<\/p>\n<p>My bootheel touched down and then it dug in. I was mid-corner and there was no backing out. The laws of physics in terms of friction coefficients applied themselves very suddenly and my foot was ripped off the forward-mounted controls and flung\u2026well, kinda up, back, and sideways. It was all very thrilling and violent, and things almost went \u201cPtang!\u201d just to the inside of my girl-pleasing vegetables. I had to pull over soon after to see if my leg still worked.<\/p>\n<p>So my fault entirely. I had not counted on finally finding PGC. The FXDR has such outrageous lean-angles (32-degrees odd) for a Harley, I could hardly be condemned for this oversight. But there you have it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1434026\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1434026\" class=\"wp-image-1434026 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/16.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/16.jpg 620w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/16-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/16-446x350.jpg 446w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/16-600x471.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1434026\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Lest those changing your tyres be in any doubt as to what marque they are working on.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Anyway, that was a lesson learned. Mind your feet when you\u2019re pushing on.<\/p>\n<p>The FXDR as a whole?<\/p>\n<p>Hell, I loved it \u2013 not the least for the way it went around corners. \u201cAt last, at last, at last\u201d I kept muttering to myself as I wound it through bend after bend.<\/p>\n<p>I also thought it looked sensational \u2013 a satisfying mix of modern techno-sass and traditional Yank ironmongery. I felt it to be an excellent stylistic replacement for the somewhat lamented VROD.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1434037\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1434037\" class=\"wp-image-1434037 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/17.jpg 620w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/17-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/17-497x350.jpg 497w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/17-600x423.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1434037\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The pre-load on the rear is easily adjustable. Mine was on 2. It worked just fine.<br \/><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s got that same fat-arse 240 rear hoop and that same low silhouette. It also folds you in half in the middle like a penknife, so big distances and long days will be a chore, but Mama didn\u2019t raise no whiner, did she?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s actually a bit of a blank canvas aesthetically \u2013 as all proper Harleys should be. There is much that can be done with it, but the foundation is solid.<\/p>\n<p>That killer 114-cube Milwaukee Eight donk, the improved-outta-sight gearbox, the revised position for the shock, the 4kg-lighter aluminium swingarm, the USD front forks \u2013 it\u2019s all there, and it behaves accordingly. It will surprise and delight you in that regard.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1434046\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1434046\" class=\"wp-image-1434046 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/19.jpg 620w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/19-300x256.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/19-410x350.jpg 410w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/19-600x512.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1434046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>I love these little styling touches &#8211; a ghosted-into-the-paint Number One.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dive under brakes is minimal because it\u2019s a long bike (2425mm) and it has a somewhat saucy rake (34-degrees) to the front-end. Sure the twin discs are welcome, but brakes are still a frontier Harley needs to address \u2013 especially on a 300kg-wet beast like this. They remain a firm pull, though feel has been improved. They work, but they could work better.<\/p>\n<p>The clutch is relatively light, and the ABS did deploy itself a few times because I was probably too enamoured of how well it went into corners and got a bit ahead of myself.<\/p>\n<p>I loved the tiny LCD display. It\u2019s informative (speedo, gear, odo, fuel level, clock, trip, range, and tacho), yet so minimal and thus pleasing to the eye.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1434064\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1434064\" class=\"wp-image-1434064 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/14.jpg 620w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/14-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/14-600x315.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1434064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The headlight is good. The bugs, not so much.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>You\u2019ll get 200-odd out of the 16l fuel tank and you\u2019ll heave that hideous muffler into the bin before it even leaves the shop. But if you decide to leave it on, it doesn\u2019t sound half bad.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t tie anything to it, which bothered me some. Like would it kill Milwaukee to maybe get those rear bolts on the rear guard to stick out some? You know, for ocky straps. Wearing backpacks on Harleys really kills the vibe.<\/p>\n<p>Still, top marks for the great headlight and a superb overall finish. I\u2019m liking the matte paint, though I\u2019m sure I don\u2019t like it much in that creamy white colour. The grey and greyer scheme is the go for mine.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1434074\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1434074\" class=\"wp-image-1434074 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/12.jpg 620w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/12-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/12-467x350.jpg 467w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/12-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1434074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>I very much like its stance.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>At a time when Milwaukee is facing an unprecedented downturn in sales, the FXDR is a huge step in a direction the company needs to take.<\/p>\n<p>The gleaming parade-sleds are all well and good for its now dwindling traditional market of slow-riding pensioners, but that is, as I\u2019ve noted, a dwindling market.<\/p>\n<p>Outlaws are still riding them hard and fast \u2013 but with the coming of the Police State, you don\u2019t see them out much anymore.<\/p>\n<p>That right there is the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Where once the outlaw persona sold Harleys to wild young blokes who craved a touch of that loud and dangerous glamour, the default poster boys for Harley are now wobbling oldies \u2013 and there is nothing cool about that.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1434082\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1434082\" class=\"wp-image-1434082 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/13.jpg 620w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/13-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/13-467x350.jpg 467w, https:\/\/bikeme.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/13-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1434082\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Those self-timer shots always look lame. And then the camera falls off the rock you balanced it on and into the dirt.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>But this FXDR is hell cool. It has soul. It is righteous. It will not appeal to the ancient wobblers precisely because it corners like a mad bastard and makes a few small demands on you ergonomically. The old and infirm need not apply. This is a Harley that goes around corners like no Harley ever has.
