Drugs, hookers, Smartphones \u2013 it applies to everything.<\/p>\n<p>And this has never rung truer than in the delightfully sordid world of big-name motorcycle gear knock-offs. Compare the stitching and finish of the fake, to the real one on the right.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Of course the kid has heard of Dainese leathers. Everyone who rides a bike has heard of the brand. But it\u2019s a top-shelf item. Dainese leather jackets can cost anywhere from $600 for on-sale items from the importer, to $1200 for the latest and greatest.<\/p>\n<p>The kid nods. The bloke looks around to see if anyone can overhear him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got some two-piece suits direct from the factory\u2026you know, that have gone out the back door, and I can get you a great deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre they stolen?\u201d asks the kid. He\u2019s no man\u2019s fool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo!\u201d the older bloke says, throwing up his arms in horror. \u201cI\u2019m not a thief! Here\u2019s my card. I am an authorised agent. These are suits that are end-of-model run-outs. They are surplus to the production run. The factory moves them separately to the stuff they send to the importer. Cheap zippers, cheap stretch panels and half the stitching that needs to be there.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d the kid asks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMate,\u201d the bloke grins. \u201cIt\u2019s important you\u2019re safe in the best gear there is. I can get you pants and a jacket, full kangaroo, for, let\u2019s say, $750.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Great deal, huh? And it\u2019s all about safety. In the best gear there is.<\/p>\n<p>The kid agrees, they exchange phone numbers and Emails and they set up a time and place to do the deal.<\/p>\n<p>The kid\u2019s job is to get his size to his new mate, then get the cash, and get to the meet point to pick up the suit.<\/p>\n<p>The deal goes through no worries. The suit is a Dainese. It\u2019s got \u201cDainese\u201d written all over it.<\/p>\n<p>The kid is overjoyed. The copies are pieces of shit. They don&#8217;t injection-mould them so the quality is akin to you just melting some old pieces of plastic together on your stove.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>His \u201cgenuine\u201d Dainese suit is a shitty knock-off from a city called Sialkot in Pakistan. There are more than 200 motorcycle clothing companies registered with the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce. And there are literally thousands of small businesses that provide these companies with everything from footballs to biker vests to \u201cgenuine\u201d Dainese and Alpine Star suits.<\/p>\n<p>These companies advertise on Gumtree and eBay and even have \u201creps\u201d like our mate above.<\/p>\n<p>Unsuspecting, trusting, na\u00efve young riders who struggle to put good tyres on their bikes are easy targets. Like all people of their generation, they are brand-whores. They see \u201ccheap\u201d big-name bike gear, they can\u2019t yell: \u201cTake my money!\u201d fast enough or loud enough.<\/p>\n<p>And then they are left with shit that will disintegrate in the slightest accident, or even worse, someone with a real Dainese jacket will spot their fake and publicly humiliate them.<\/p>\n<p>I called up Ed Brown from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ozmotorcycleleathers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">OZMC leathers<\/a> <\/strong>(the importers of top-end Gimoto race leathers) and asked him to have a look at the two jackets \u2013 one the fake and one the real deal, which I borrowed from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcas.com.au\/\">Motorcycle Accessories Supermarket<\/a><\/strong>, the authorised importers of Dainese gear. It\u2019s always good to get an expert\u2019s opinion in these cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no such thing as \u201cback door Dainese\u201d or \u201cfactory-leakage Sidi boots\u201d, Ed explained. \u201cThey\u2019re all fakes. Five years ago, you could pick one out from ten metres away. Some of the new ones, you really have to look up close. This isn\u2019t a fake Ralph Lauren shirt we\u2019re talking about. This is what is going to protect your flesh and bones if the shit hits the fan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I feel that if you\u2019re stupid enough to think you\u2019re getting real Dainese gear for half the price, then you deserve all the skin-grafts and humiliation you\u2019re gonna get.<\/p>\n<p>Harsh?
